Water Supply
Clinton Power Station, currently owned by Exelon, utilizes a pressurized non-transient non-community public water system utilizing treated water from Clinton Lake. The cooling lake is of relatively good quality most of the year with low levels of organics and most importantly no appreciable gas or iron content. The proximity and abundance of the cooling lake makes it a highly reliable and cost-effective water source. Clinton Lake water is pretreated to a certain degree using coagulation, clarification, filtration and reverse osmosis prior to being used as a makeup source to potable water that is used throughout the plant for drinking water and sanitary facilities. Potable water usage on an annual basis is approximately 16 million gallons. Operation of the potable water system must comply with Illinois Department of Public Health Regulations Title 77.
Although not planned for a public water source, in the future it is possible that the lake could be used for drinking water for the surrounding areas given the correct treatment. The usage for this water will be based on a potential for community development in the surrounding areas around the lake. Treatment would be based on Illinois Department of Public Health regulations and requirements.
Funding for this project provided, in part, by the Governor of Illinois and the Illinois Envieronmental Protection Agency through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.
